HONG KONG — 1 September 2026. Mercury Technology Solutions sponsored International Christian School Hong Kong (ICS) as its student racing team became the first from Asia to compete in STEM On Track — the UK schools motorsport programme run in partnership with the BWT Alpine F1 Team. The team designed, built, and raced its own car at a UK circuit in June 2026.

For the students, the campaign compressed an entire engineering cycle into days.

Three days, one race car

The ICS crew assembled and prepared the car on site, working through the problems that define real engineering: bleeding air pockets out of the brake lines, mating the rear axle, and tracking down a bent component that had been quietly sabotaging the handling. The build came together in under three days.

Track time began before the team ever saw tarmac. On a simulator of the race circuit itself, the drivers learned cornering technique, braking points, and where the car could carry speed — then confirmed it in practice runs, deliberately preserving the car for race day.

The livery was the students' own design, its colours and imagery marking their status as Asia's first participating team. Applying the stickers they had drawn themselves, team members said, was the moment the work became real.

Race day

The paddock on arrival was crowded and chaotic — a jolt for a first-year team — but once on track, the drivers found the car controllable and the racing genuinely competitive against a full grid.

The debut took the hit motorsport always keeps in store: a crash the team attributed to the nature of the sport and factors outside their control. What remained was the part that matters. A first-year team from Hong Kong, with a three-day build behind them, came away proud of their performance — and clear-eyed that their resilience, not luck, produced the result.

Why Mercury backed it

"Mercury builds bridges between what technology can do and what teams actually deliver. These students proved the same thesis on a UK racetrack in three days: diagnose, fix, race," said James Huang, Founder & CEO of Mercury Technology Solutions. "They arrived as the first team from Asia and left as proof of what Hong Kong students can ship under pressure. Sponsoring them was the easiest decision we made this year."

Hilda Wong at ICS Hong Kong, said: "We learned the circuit on a simulator, built the car in under three days, and fixed whatever broke. Racing in the UK as the first team from Asia was the proudest moment of our school year."

About STEM On Track

STEM On Track is a UK schools programme designed by teachers, in which secondary students design, build, and race their own race karts at test days and national events. Run in partnership with the BWT Alpine F1 Team, the programme connects maths and science to real-world motorsport careers — with a focus on teamwork, resilience, and confidence.
